Lana and Jack walked into the meeting together. The found a place to sit and watched as the warriors gathered to cast their vote. Each warrior had an equal say in the vote. They would decide if Jack would be accepted into the guild. If majority agreed, he would be trained in their ways, including the Projection Spell. In exchange for the training, Jack would be expected to vote and stand with them against any threats. He could also be hired or assigned to guard a family. As Jack looked around the room, he felt hopeful that his family and community had grown to include the warriors of the Elven Wilds.

Edwin Liahorn stood at the front of the room. “Today we have a unique situation. An outsider, the half-dwarf, half-human warrior, Jack Vance stands with us as a friend and ally. He requests that we allow him to join our guild, partake in our sacred magics and share new magics with us in exchange. It is rare for our guild to accept outsiders, but not without precedence. Those allowed in often intend to spend their lives among our people. Jack and Lana will not, they have responsibilities and allegiances elsewhere. However, the knowledge they leave with us can strengthen our people for generations to come. If anyone has words to speak before the vote, now is the time.”

None of the elves moved.

Then Arsin spoke. “I have something to say.”

Jack wiggled nervously as he watched the proud elven warrior move to the front of the room to join Edwin.

Arsin looked at Jack and Lana for a moment before addressing his fellow elves. “The moment I saw Jack Vance, I hated him. This outsider was in one of our sacred places, enjoying the tranquility and serenity of the land with Lana Liahorn. It bothered me to see how close they were. I love the Liahorns, they are my family, and even within that family, Lana has always held a special place in my heart. It angered me to see her with this outsider who I thought to be beneath her. However, since he has arrived here, Jack Vance has proven my thoughts to not only be wrought with ignorance and jealousy, but to be wrong in every way. He is an exceptional warrior and healer, and his heart is as strong and noble as any elf. I would be honored to call him a brother in arms and accept him into the guild. However, most of you already know that from our conversations last night. What I want to speak of, is the failings of our Leader Edwin Liahorn.”

A few of the elven warriors mumbled angrily.

Edwin raised his hand. “Let him finish.”

Arsin nodded at his leader and then continued. “Edwin has been a second father to me and has been a most capable leader. He’s pushed me, challenged me, and allowed me to grow into a warrior. He leads with integrity and bravery.”

“Damn it, Arsin, quit talking like a damn politician and tell us what your issue is,” said one of the older elven warriors.
